In addition to formal education all states require that architecture graduates complete a paid internship of at least 3 years before they can take the Architect Registration Exam. Currently, 35 states require that architects have a professional degree from one of 123 architecture schools accredited with the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). A typical BA program includes courses in architectural history, building design with an emphasis in computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) as well as other courses in math, physics, and construction methods. Some even go on to obtain a master’s degree in architecture which can take an additional 1-5 years of education. Most bachelor degree programs in architecture take an average of five years to complete and costs between $19,791 and $30,000 a year. They include completing a professional degree in architecture, gaining relevant experience, and passing the Architect Registration Exam (ARE). There are three basic steps to becoming a licensed architect. Self-employed architects may have more flexible hours, but they tend to have to work long hours as well. Because they are usually commissioned by an individual or organization architects are often required to meet with clients to discuss objectives, requirements, costs of projects, etc. Most architects work for architecture firms, but there are a few that have enough experience that they can work for themselves outside of a firm.
